Talk.bizarre

talk.bizarre is a newsgroup on Usenet. It was originally net.bizarre, before the Great Renaming, after which it was placed in the talk hierarchy. Its denizens often referred to it as "the froup", after "newsfroup", a typo which they adopted for their own. It was originally intended for postings of odd and unusual happenings and weird stories. By the early 90's, most of the articles were crossposted from other newsgroups, and many posters may not have known their articles appeared there. But there was a core group of talk.bizarre posters. Some of them enjoyed the crossposts, and others hated them. Many of them preferred to compose original material, poetry or prose. They jokingly referred to themselves as The Cabal. Many of them got together for gatherings called BOBs, after the first one, FAT.BOB("The First Annual talk.bizarre Outrageous Blowout"). From the mid-90's onward, they often spent time chatting on a private MUD. They were not always receptive to newcomers, often begin hostile to newbies, but it was always possible for people to become accepted if they posted decent content and improved the signal to noise ratio.
