Taikyoku Shodan

Taikyoku shodan is the first karate kata of the Taikyoku series, all of which follow the same layout (similar to Heian shodan). This Shotokan kata consists entirely of low blocks (gedan barai) and mid-level straight punches (Oi-tsuki). The Taikyoku kata were developed by Gichin Funakoshi as a way to simplify the principles of the already simplified Heian series. The embusen, or pattern of the kata's movements, are the same as in Heian shodan. Students training in Shotokan are typically introduced to the Taikyoku series first, as a preparation for beginning the Heian.

Taikyoku sandan

Third (and last) of the Taikyoku Shotokan kata series. Same layout as in the two previous ones but with different blocks (uchi ude uke), and with punches at two levels (oi-tsuki chudan after the blocks, jodan up and down the central line).
