Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) http://www.microsoft.com/sms is a product for managing large groups of Microsoft-based computer systems. Provides remote control, patch management, software distribution, and hardware/software inventory. Current version is "2003" Competes directly with Novell's ZENworks which can manage Windows-based and Linux-based systems. Competes directly with IBM's Tivoli Management Framework (TME) http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/mgt-framework/. Competes with numerous portions of numerous patch management products, remote control solutions, and remote inventory applications. Vintela Management Extensions http://www.vintela.com/products/vmx/ provides the possibility to manage Unix computer systems from within SMS as well.
