Symphony No. 15 (Shostakovich)
The
Symphony No. 15 in A major
(Opus 141) by
Dmitri Shostakovich
was written in
1971
and first performed in
Moscow
on 8 January
1972
by the
All-Union Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra
under
Maxim Shostakovich
. The work has four
movements
:
Allegretto
Adagio
-
Largo
Allegretto
Adagio
-
Allegretto
Though written for a large orchestra, the symphony is scored quite delicately, almost like chamber music, with a large but quiet battery of percussion adding to the unusual colorings. It is filled with cryptic allusions to music of
Gioacchino Rossini
,
Richard Wagner
, and
Gustav Mahler
and ranks as one of Shostakovich's most unusual works.
