Symphonic Metal

Symphonic Metal is a subclass of the genre of metal music in general. It is characterised by its usage of a symphony orchestra throughout songs in order to add melody and texture to the heavy drums and distorted guitars of metal. The orchestra is generally kept in the background. Often used in black metal, especially by Norwegian bands.
