Swisscom

Swisscom AG is the largest telephone company of Switzerland.

History

It used to be part of the state-owned monopoly PTT (Post Telefon Telegraph in German, Poste Tlphone Tlgraph in French). In the mid-nineties, the Swiss government, in-line with general liberation of the pan-European telecommuncations market, broke up the postal and telecommuncations divisons into two companies, Swiss Post and PTT Telecom of which it lead to further privatisation in 1997 to Swisscom.

Company

Its internet divison is called BlueWin, formally Blue Window, and its mobile divison is called, Swisscom Mobile, formerly Natel (Nationales Autotelefon). Swisscom Mobile has links with Vodafone. Its main local competitors are Sunrise and Orange.

Comments

Swisscom's nickname, mainly used in the media, is the "Blue Giant".
