Swath Ship

  Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull
A Swath ship is a waterplane-area twin-hull ship; however its hulls are like submarines that are completely submerged. The ship is connected to its twin hulls by relatively thin vertical struts. For this reason a Swath ship closely resembles a catamaran. The Swath ship concept was invented by Canadian Frederick G. Creed, who presented his idea in 1938 and was later awarded a British patent for it in 1946. The acronym SWATH was coined by the US Navy in 1973 to better distinguish this concept from conventional catamarans. The acronym stands for Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull.
