Swan River Colony
The
Swan River Colony
was the name given to the
British
penal colony established on the
Swan River
by Captain
James Stirling
in
1829
. The colonists first sighted land on
1 June
, the official Proclamation was made on
18 June
, and the foundation of the colony took place on
12 August
. The two separate townsites of the colony developed slowly into the port city of
Fremantle
and the
Western Australian
capital city
Perth
