Swampscott, Massachusetts

Swampscott is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,412.

History

Swampscott was first settled in 1629 and was officially incorporated in 1852.

Geography

Swampscott is located at 42°28'27" North, 70°54'21" West (42.474409, -70.905883). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²). 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 54.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 14,412 people, 5,719 households, and 3,986 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,824.4/km² (4,725.9/mi²). There are 5,930 housing units at an average density of 750.7/km² (1,944.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.47% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,719 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00. In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $71,089, and the median income for a family is $82,795. Males have a median income of $56,541 versus $38,690 for females. The per capita income for the town is $45,487. 3.7% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
