Swamimalai

Swamimalai is a small town near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It lies on the banks of river Cauvery.

Location

It is on the road connecting Kumbakonam and Thiruvaiyaru. It can also be reached by train.

Notable

It is noteworthy for having the only school that teaches the art (craft) of making bronze icons. Like the rest of this part of the Thanjavur district it mainly produces rice and sugar cane.

Temple

It is one of the six sacred temples of Lord Karthikeya, whose temples are generally located atop hillocks. In fact the name of the town means 'God's mountain'. However, there is no hill here - for that matter in the entire Thanjavur area. It appears to be a man made structure.
