Suspension Mark

The suspension mark (.) is used to indicate omission, as in i.e. (id est) and st. (street). It is correct in American usage to use a suspension mark in such constructions as Dr., Mr., St. (Saint), etc. In Britain, however, this is considered incorrect, or at least bad style.
