Supermemo

SuperMemo (from Super Memory) is a learning method and software package developed in Poland from 1985 to the present. It is a practical application of the so-called spaced repetition that has been proposed for efficient instruction by a number of psychologists as early as in the 1930s. Proponents of the method claim that it makes possible faster learning and indefinite retention of memories (with repetition). The method is available as a computer program for Windows, Windows CE, Palm Pilot, etc. It can also be used in a web browser or even without a computer. SuperMemo is based on research into long-term memory.

Steps for using the method

  1. Collecting learning material: SuperMemo helps create collections of facts the student would like to remember. E.g. it can convert web articles into learning material
  2. Probe the memory: SuperMemo tests student's knowledge of individual facts and collects information about his or her memory (so called "memory model")
  3. Make well-timed repetitions: By understanding student's memory, SuperMemo finds the optimum timing for review of the learned material. Each fact stored in the learning collection will have a unique pattern of review and repetition
With minimum number of repetitions scheduled by SuperMemo, the student needs not spend time on repeating material he or she knows well. The increase in the speed of learning is obtained without a decrease in the recall rate.
