U.S. National Monument
in the north-central part of the
U.S. state
of
Arizona
, intended to protect
Sunset Crater Volcano
. It is maintained by the
National Park Service
in close conjunction with nearby
Wupatki National Monument
. The monument was established in the
1930s
as a result of a public outcry over a film crew's plan to create a landslide at the site for use in a movie. The plan was never put into action.
