Sun Lakes is an unincorporated town located in Maricopa County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 11,936.

Geography

Sun Lakes is located at 33°12'53" North, 111°52'12" West (33.214686, -111.869966). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,936 people, 6,683 households, and 4,798 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 879.5/km² (2,278.7/mi²). There are 7,746 housing units at an average density of 570.8/km² (1,478.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.37% White, 0.78% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,683 households out of which 0.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% are married couples living together, 1.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.79 and the average family size is 2.06. In the CDP the population is spread out with 0.2% under the age of 18, 0.3% from 18 to 24, 2.1% from 25 to 44, 31.3% from 45 to 64, and 66.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 69 years. For every 100 females there are 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,634, and the median income for a family is $50,333. Males have a median income of $46,250 versus $35,350 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $33,394. 2.8% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
