Sultan Hashim Ahmed

Lt.-General Sultan Hashim Ahmed al Jabburi Tai was the former Defence Minister of Iraq under Saddam Hussein's rule. A close relative of Saddam Hussein, he was appointed to the position in 1995. His daughter was married to Qusay Hussein, the dictator's younger son. As the invasion of Iraq loomed, it was reported in The Guardian on February 2003 that he had been placed under house arrest by Saddam Hussein, in an extraordinary move that was apparently designed to prevent a coup. Nevertheless he continued to appear on Iraqi state TV, to preserve a sense of normalcy. He was number 27 on the United States' list of most wanted former Iraqi officials. On September 19, 2003, after nearly a week of negotiations, he gave himself up in Mosul and was then granted immunity from prosecution. He served Saddam during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War and later in the First Gulf War, signing the cease-fire that ended it. He survived several purges and became the highest-ranking general in the Iraqi army. Ahmed's specialty was military intelligence; he graduated from Baghdad's National Security Institute in 1975.
