. It is located at 46.07° North, 19.68° East, about 10 km from the border with
Hungary
. It is the second largest city of the region next to
Novi Sad
, with a population of 100,386. Its name stems from word "Saturday" in
Serbian language
. Surroundings of Subotica are mainly farmland but the city itself is an important Serbian industrial and transportation centre. It is the administrative center of the
North Backa District
of Serbia.
