Strongman Super Series

The IFSA Strongman Super Series is a sequence of grand prix events in the sport of strength athletics. It was introduced in 2001 in response to concerns that unlike other individual sports such as golf or tennis, there was no recognised international "tour" in strength athletics. The Strongman Super Series ensures that there are a number of high-profile, professionally run contests during the year, with competitors' placings being used to decide the World Champion. At present, the Super Series calendar runs from July through to the following March. Established events on the tour are the Canada GP, Hawaii GP, Sweden GP and USA GP (which is always the last in the series). Greece and the Netherlands have hosted Super Series events in the past, and a Moscow GP was added to the tour for the first time at the start of the 2004-5 series. Any event can be part of the Super Series, provided that it meets the standards laid down by the IFSA. These include adequate provision for the media and spectators, a high standard of safety, and a minimum level of prize money. Unlike most strength athletics competitions, in which six events are held, a Super Series GP usually comprises eight events from an official list of sixteen. Six of these are chosen by the IFSA, with a further two selected by the host organisation. Typically, ten athletes take part in each GP, comprising the top six in the IFSA rankings and at least four qualifiers or wildcard entries. The winner of each grand prix receives ten series points, the second placed, nine, and so on. The highest scoring competitor at the end of the series is named World Champion.
