Strget

Strget is a carfree zone and the longest pedestrian shopping area in the world. Located in Copenhagen, Denmark it is a popular tourist attraction. The street is bounded by Rdhuspladsen, the central town square in the west, and by Kongens Nytorv, another large square on the other end. Many of the city's most famous and expensive stores, such as Illums Bolighus, the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, and chain stores, are located along the strip, as well as a multitude of tourist memorabilia establishments and fast food outlets. Strget was created in the 1960s when cars were beginning to dominate the old downtown streets. Municipal politicians wanted to ensure some areas remained carfree. Since then it has become a model often emulated elsewhere. Danish architect and urban planner Jan Gehl has been instrumental in the creation of this pedestrian zone. Strget is actually a collection of streets. In the order from Rdshuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv
