Stretching (Body Piercing)

Stretching, in the context of body piercing, is a process whereby the skin surrounding a hole created by piercing is stretched to accomodate larger guage jewellery, possibly including specialised jewellery such as ear plugs and flesh tunnels. In a modern Western context, this is usually achieved by placing jewellery, or spacers, of gradually increasing size into the piercing, over a period of weeks or months. A drawback of stretching is that often the skin is stretched beyond its ability to return to its original shape, making this a potentially permanent form of body modification. The effects of stretching can be achieved more rapidly by the technique of scalpelling.
