Overview

Strawbridge and Clothier is a department store found in the northeastern United States with stores in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The main store is located in downtown Philadelphia at the Gallery Mall.

History

The store began as a dried goods store and was founded by Quakers Justus Calyton Strawbridge (1838-1911) and Issac Hallowell Clothier (1838-1911) in Philadelphia in 1862. Strawbridge was bought by May Department Stores Company in 1996 (13 stores) and operated under the Hecht division. Most stores now operate as Strawbridge's, but some retain their original names.
