Strand Book Store

The Strand Book Store, located at Broadway and East 12 Street, is a legendary book store in New York City, most famous for its giant collection of rare, used, and out-of-print books, its advertising slogan "18 miles of books", and the creative chaos on and around its shelves. Still a family business with today more than 200 employees, it opened in 1927 on 4th Avenue, the then-famous Book Row of America, by Benjamin Bass. After his son Fred took over the business in 1956, he soon moved the store to the present location, where the store now takes five floors. A second store opened later at Fulton Street in the financial district.
