Stillwell Avenue (Bmt Coney Island Terminal)

Stillwell Avenue station, also known as Coney Island Terminal or Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island station, at Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City, is the world's largest single rapid transit terminal facility. It serves as a terminal for four different lines of the New York City Subway with four different services. The station is located at the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues in Coney Island, the site of the former West End Terminal. It contains eight tracks on four platforms with trains entering from both the north and south. Coney Island Terminal has been undergoing a complete rebuilding, begun in 2003 and to be completed by summer 2005. The former steel and concrete terminal station, badly corroded by the effects of salt water and poor maintenance is being replaced with all new infrastructure, including a soaring roof arches said to be reminiscent of classical European train sheds. A complete new entrance building is being constructed, with a terra cotta facade in imitation of the former terminal including restored signs and logos. Most trains that have served the terminal have terminated there, however, at least two services have gone straight through:
  • BMT 7 Brighton-Franklin service, from the Franklin Shuttle through Coney Island to Manhattan
  • Brighton 'super-express' service
