Geography to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 457.9 km² (176.8 mi²). 439.2 km² (169.6 mi²) of it is land and 18.7 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.08% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,065 people, 1,369 households, and 955 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.0/km² (18.1/mi²). There are 3,777 housing units at an average density of 8.6/km² (22.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.24% White, 0.13% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,369 households out of which 19.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.63. In the town the population is spread out with 18.6% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 22.0% from 25 to 44, 34.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older.
