Stephen WinstenStephen Winsten (born c.1890) was the name adopted by Samuel Weinstein, one of the 'Whitechapel Boys' group of young Jewish men and future writers in London's East End in the years before World War I (the others were Isaac Rosenberg, John Rodker and Joseph Leftwich). He is now known for his works about George Bernard Shaw, and his life of Henry Salt. He married the artist Clara Birnberg (born 1894); they both became Quakers. She as Clare Winsten is known for some sculptures, including one of St. Joan in the garden of Shaws house in Ayot Saint Lawrence in Hertfordshire. The Winstens were neighbours of his there. Clare illustrated Shaw's Buoyant Billions : A Comedy of No Manners in Prose (1949), and the posthumously published My Dear Dorothea: A practical system of Moral education for females Embodied in a letter to a young person Of that sex (1956), written when he was 21.
