Stella (Beer)

This article is about the Egyptian beer; for the Belgian beer, see Stella Artois.
Stella is a brand of Egyptian beer. It is the flagship product of the Al Ahram Beverages Company ("ABC"), formerly a nationalized enterprise but privatized in 1997 and purchased by Heineken in 2002. Stella is available in three varieties:
  • Stella Lager: the original, with a yellow label; 3.5% alcohol by volume.
  • Stella Export Lager: gold label, 4% alcohol content.
  • Stella Premium Lager: the newest addition to the line, sporting a silver label; 5% alcohol.

In recognition of the prevailing climate and to the delight of Egypt's many foreign visitors, the standard packaging of the first two varieties is a generous 500 ml bottle. (Premium comes in a 330 ml presentation.) The bar-room price foreign visitors will pay for a bottle of Stella Lager starts at around EGP 9.00 (EUR 1.20 or USD 1.50 as of February 2005), but could rise to EGP 20 or 25 in a five-star hotel lobby bar. T-shirts with the distinctive Stella star logo and Friedrich Nietzsche's inspirational slogan "That which does not kill us makes us stronger" are sold in tourist areas throughout the country. ABC also produces "Meister", a lighter lager, sold in bottles or cans; "Birell" and "Kaliber", which are nonalcoholic beers (strict Muslims eschew the consumption of alcohol); and a range of soft drinks.
