State News

The State News is the campus newspaper of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. It is supported by a combination of advertising revenue and a $4 tax that students pay at each semester's matriculation. Though The State News supported by a student tax, the faculty and administration do not interfere in the paper's content.

History

The State News started in 1909, when MSU was still called Michigan Agricultural College (M.A.C.). For its first two decades, the paper was called the Holcad. When M.A.C. became MSU, the paper changed its name to the Michigan State News. Eventually, this got clipped to The State News. (MSU students have always downplayed the use of the word "Michigan" in order to minimize any confusion with their archrival, the University of Michigan.)

Publishing and Distribution

Free copies of the paper are available online or at at green-coloured newsstands around campus and the city. The State News prints 28,500 copies of the paper Monday through Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters, and 15,000 copies three times a week during the summer. The paper is not published on weekends, holidays, or semester breaks.
