star posts

In the popular video game series Sonic the Hedgehog, lamp-post shaped items called Star Posts (named by the distinctive star) were used as "save points" - whenever Sonic lost a life, he would return to the last Star Post he touched. If Sonic fulfilled certain conditions when touching a Star Post, he would be transported to the Special Stage/Zone, where he would compete for a Chaos Emerald (in later games, the Special Zone would exist solely for the collection of power-ups). In the Sonic Comics, Star Posts acted as the entryway into the Special Zone, which in the comics was an alternate dimension.
