Standing Rigging

On a sailing boat, the standing rigging is that collection of lines which are fixed. Standing rigging includes a forestay, a backstay and the shrouds. On modern yachts, standing rigging is often stainless steel wires or stainless steel rods. Standing rigging is placed under tension to keep the various spars (mast, bowsprit) securely in position. Contrast with running rigging.
