Standing OvationA standing ovation is a specialised form of applause, where, in addition to clapping and perhaps cheering, members of a seated audience will stand up while applauding. This action is usually done by the audience to show their approval above and beyond normal seated applause. The level of audience approval is measured firstly by how many in the audience actually stand, secondly the length of time that the standing and applause continues, and thirdly (over the course of an event) the number of ovations given. Customs for the usage of standing ovations vary, but it is generally considered to be a significant honour, bestowed only on special occasions or as a sign of particularly high acclaim. Often it is used at the entrance or departure of a speaker/performer, where the audience members will continue the ovation until the ovated person leaves or begins their speech. Events where a standing ovation is customary include the arrival of the President of the United States at the State of the Union Address.
