St. Thomas University (New Brunswick)

St. Thomas University (STU) is a Catholic liberal arts university located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It offers degrees exclusively at the undergraduate level for approximately 3,000 students in liberal arts, humanities, education and social work. The university was founded by the Roman Catholic Church in 1910 in Chatham, New Brunswick, but moved to a new campus in Fredericton's "College Hill" neighbourhood, adjacent to the University of New Brunswick in 1964. The two institutions now share facilities for their student unions, libraries, and athletics, and they have a common heating plant. This move was controversial at the time, since it was made by the Bishop of Saint John without consulting the Catholics of the Miramichi River valley, who had contributed heavily to the university's construction and had financially supported it for many years.

St. Thomas Tommies

St. Thomas is represented in Canadian Interuniversity Sport by the St. Thomas Tommies. The university's teams compete in men's and women's ice hockey, volleyball, soccer, basketball and rugby. The men's and womens hockey teams compete in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Basketball, soccer and volleyball teams compete in the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). The rugby teams compete in an organized club league. New Brunswick Sports Hall of Famer Danny Grant is the Assistant Coach of the men's Hockey team. See also Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
