St. John's Beacon

St. John's Beacon is the name of a tower in Liverpool, built in 1965. It is 133 metres high and was built as a ventilation shaft for St. John's Market. Near the top of the tower was situated a revolving restaurant and on top of that a viewing platform. The restaurant stopped rotating after the main bearings seized. The resturant and viewing platform closed in 1977 after damage to the lift mechanism. Since 2001 the viewing platform has been enclosed and combined with the restaurant area to provide a base for 'Radio City'. It can also be hired as a function room. The top of the tower is now festooned with aerials and an advertising hording.
