Sremska Mitrovica
(Сремска Митровица) is a city located in the
Vojvodina
province of
Serbia and Montenegro
at 44.98° North, 19.61° East. In
2003
the city had a total population of 39,200. Its name means "Mitrovica of
Srem
" (
Mitrovica of Kosovo
also exists) while Mitrovica stems from name "Demetrius" or "Dimitrije" in
Serbian language
. Its name under the
Roman Empire
was
Sirmium
. From 1180.AD the name changed from "Civitas Sancti Demetrii", "Dmitrovica" and "Mitrovica" to its todays form "Sremska Mitrovica". It is the administrative center of the
Srem District
of Serbia.
