Springwood

Springwood is a suburb located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, NSW. In 1815 Governor Macquarie and his wife stopped by a spring for water down a deep glen. This gave way to the place that is now called Springwood, the second largest suburb in the Blue Mountains. The Spring of the name refers to the many springs that naturally occurred in the area and the Wood refers to the majestic Blue Gum forests of the area - much of which is now cleared for development. Blue Gum Forests are now referred to as Blue Mountains Shalecap Forests and are a threatened ecological community in the Blue Mountains. Springwood features the oldest railway station building in the Blue Mountains, having been a coal and water stop in the steam era. The town now hosts a diverse range of shops, cafes, historic hotels, antique shops, galleries and amenities for both tourists and locals. There are excellent bushwalks located close to the town centre. The town comes alive in April for Springwood Foundation Day and in October for Springwood Crazy Day. Springwood serves as focal point for several outer suburbs including Linden, Faulconbridge, Winmalee, Yellow Rock and Valley Heights. Things to do and see in Springwood:
  • Sassafras Gully - a bushwalker's paradise
  • Birdwood Gully for easy bushwalks
  • Deanei Reserve - the original Blue Gum forests of Springwood

Springwood is also known as the home the well-known Norman Lindsay Gallery. Artist Norman Lindsay was depicted in the movie Sirens by Sam Neill. Springwood has several churches including Springwood Baptist Church, Springwood Catholic Church, Springwood Anglican Church, Springwood Uniting Church and Springwood Presbyterian Church. Faulconbridge, a neighbouring suburb of Springwood, was home of "father of federation", Sir Henry Parkes. Parkes is now buried there.
