Spirit Singing

A singing practice created by Mary Elizabeth Wheeler and Shanwa Carol in 1985 after working with Susan Osbon, then the lead singer for the Paul Winter Consort. The practice is a combination of voice empowerment, emotional catharthis, and spiritual experience, or in some cases, just an opportunity for those who don't believe they can sing to try singing in a safe environment. Wheeler and Carol created the Spirit Song Institute through which they trained hundreds of participants either in the practice itself or in how to train others in the practice. They subsequently also put out a CD by the name of "Mystic Soul," although this was a more conventional folk music CD than an example of spirit singing itself.
