Sphinx Head SocietyThe Sphinx Head Society is a highly secretive senior honorary society at Cornell University. The oldest and most prestigious secret society at Cornell, Sphinxhead was founded in 1890 by a group of students in partnership with Andrew Dickson White. The first class was tapped in the Spring of 1891. The tradition of tapping outstanding students continues today with new members being tapped in both the spring and fall semesters. Since its early years, the society has been a prominent force on campus and has been responsible for a number of special events at Cornell such as Dragon Day (1901 to present) to the pumpkin placed atop McGraw Tower (1997). There is only one similar society at Cornell University, Quill and Dagger, which was founded in 1893 by two Sphinx Head Members who were expelled for "immoral acts" which disgraced the University. Sphinx Head is known for honoring outstanding leaders based on their strength of character and dedication; Quill and Dagger is known for tapping seniors based on their titles and/or positions of influence in Campus organizations. Over the years, Sphinx Head has supported Quill and Dagger and other junior societies in also offering seniors honorary membership. Seniors are allowed to join only one of the two societies the choice is seen as a test of each perspective member's character. While the location of Sphinx Head's meeting place is secret, it exists in a hidden location somewhere on Central Campus. The membership takes an oath to keep the location of their "hallowed hall" since they do not want superficial representations of their society's purpose to entice perspective seniors to join.
