Sphincter

From late Latin sphincter, from Greek sphinkter, band, contractile muscle, from sphingein, to bind tight. A sphincter is a ring-like muscle that normally maintains constriction of a natural body passage or orifice and that relaxes as required by normal physiological functioning.
