SpelljammingSpelljamming is the act of piloting a spelljamming vessel in the Spelljammer Campaign Setting of Dungeons & Dragons. Spelljamming is done using a spelljamming helm, which come in many different varieties. Some are listed below. The helmsman, essentially becomes one with the ship and gives it motive force. The speed of a spelljamming vessel is measured on a scale of 1 to 10 called Ship's Rating (or SR). The helm though does not affect the ship's maneuverability. The most common types of spelljamming helms are Major and Minor helms. Types of Spelljamming Helms Major and Minor Helms These helms draw on arcane or divine magical energy to move the ship. The more powerpul the spellcaster at the helm, the faster the ship can go. These usually appear as large chairs. A spellcaster at the helm has all their magic drawn into the helm and thus cannot cast spells while spelljamming. Furnace This type of helm also draws on magical energy to move a ship; however, instead of drawing it from a spellcaster, it instead draws it from a magical item. The process eventualy destroys the item, forcing the ships crew to continually feed magical items to the furnace until they arrive at their destination. Obviously, an item in the furnace cannot be used or withdrawn. This helm provides a ship's rating of 2 or 3. Lifejammer This helm converts one's lifeforce into motive power. Basically, an individual sits at the helm and has their hitpoints slowly drained as they pilot the ship. On the plus side, this means that non-spellcasting characters such as fighters or rogues can pilot. Forge This type of helm is only found in Dwarven Citadel ships. It provides a constant ship's rating as long as people are working at the forge. Somehow it converts creative energy into motion. Basically, many Dwarves work at the forge for many hours, making whatever. At the same time, they are moving their ship. Serial Helm This type of helm is used exclusively by Mind Flayers (or Illithids). Two of these helms are needed minimum to move a ship. This type of helm allows the Mind Flayers to combine their psychic powers to move their ships. The minimum ship's rating is 2 for two helms in serious. The maximum is 5 (for five in series obviosuly). Pool Helm This helm is also used exclusively by the Mind Flayers. It employs an Illithid elder brain, which has enormous psychic powers, to move the ship. It provides a constant ship's rating of 5. Beholder Helms Details are sketchy, but it is believed that beholders pilot their ships either through the power of a great eye tyrant hive mother or through the power of beholder mages. Gnomish Helms The Tinker Gnomes of Krynn have their own type of helm, which is basically just a minor helm with all sorts of useless gizmos attached that may, in fact, reduce the effectiveness of the helm. Crown of Stars This helm is basically a minor helm that is a crown instead of a chair. As such, a helmsman wearing a Crown of Stars can walk about and fight (but still can't cast spells obviosuly). Artifurnace This helm is similar to the furnace helm; however, instead of consuming magical items, an artifact must be placed inside. The artifact is not consumed in the process and may be removed. Removing the artifact brings the vessel to a halt. Artifurnaces are extremely rare and are artifacts in their own right. An Artifurnace provides a constant ship's rating of 5.
