Sparta, New YorkSparta is a town located in Livingston County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,627. The Town of Sparta is in the southeast part of the county. History The area was first settled around 1794. Sparta was established in 1789, but was diminished by the removal of land for other towns. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.8 km² (27.7 mi²). 71.8 km² (27.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,627 people, 595 households, and 462 families residing in the town. The population density is 22.6/km² (58.6/mi²). There are 627 housing units at an average density of 8.7/km² (22.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.62% White, 0.68% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 595 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% are non-families. 15.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.03. In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 107.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $43,155, and the median income for a family is $48,333. Males have a median income of $35,938 versus $23,693 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,947. 10.2% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
