Spare Change

Spare Change is a newspaper published through the efforts of the Homeless Empowerment Project, a grassroots organization created to help end homelessness (from their website, http://www.homelessempowerment.org/). As of 2004, each vendor of the paper typically receives $.75 for every $1.00, per issue he or she sells; they are allowed to keep any money that is given to them over the $1.00 price of each paper. The paper contains news features, interviews, stories, poetry and classified ads that are all written by people who are homeless or who work with the homeless.
