Southwest Miramichi RiverThe Southwest Miramichi is the larger of two branches into which the Miramichi River bifurcates at the western end of the city of Miramichi. It is tidal in its lower stretches. The river has its origins in the low remnants of the Appalachian Mountains found in the north centre of the Province of New Brunswick, Canada. From here it flows southward and then east through heavily forested country. It turns south southeast before turning towards the northeast in a long stretch heading toward the city of Miramichi. It is along this last stretch that most of the settlement is found. The river is noted for sport salmon fishing. Several small villages and hamlets are found along its banks. The tiny hamlet of Juniper is the only settlement in the upper reaches. In its last, long, northeast section the following communities are found, starting upstream: Boisetown, Doaktown, Blackville, Renous and Millerville. Tributaries include the Renous River flowing from the west and joining the Southwest Miramichi at the village of Renous; the Cains River which flows through forested land parallel to the main river and joins it from the south just upstream from Blackville; and the Barnaby River, which joins the Southwest from the southeast, close to Miramichi.
