South Yarra is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. As the name suggests, it is located on the southern bank of the Yarra River. The area east of Punt Road is in the Local Government Area of the City of Stonnington and the area to the west is in the City of Melbourne. It has a railway station, on the Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston and Sandringham lines. It is the junction for the Sandringham line. Tram routes 8, 72, 78 and 79 also run through South Yarra. The area of South Yarra centred on Commercial Road is one of Melbourne's gay villages. The Melbourne television station ATV-10 has its headquarters at the Como Centre in South Yarra.

History

South Yarra was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri tribe of the Kulin aboriginal nation. On October 12, 1988, Police Officers Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre were executed in Walsh Street, South Yarra . This was just one part of a long saga involving the Melbourne Underworld, which continues to this day.
