South Whittier, CaliforniaSouth Whittier is a census-designated place located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 55,193. Geography South Whittier is located at 33°56'5" North, 118°1'51" West (33.934724, -118.030800). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 55,193 people, 14,673 households, and 12,266 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 3,961.0/km² (10,257.7/mi²). There are 15,008 housing units at an average density of 1,077.1/km² (2,789.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 52.47% White, 1.47% African American, 1.23% Native American, 3.02% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 36.37% from other races, and 5.18% from two or more races. 69.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,673 households out of which 48.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.4% are non-families. 12.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.74 and the average family size is 3.99. In the CDP the population is spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.8 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $47,378, and the median income for a family is $49,756. Males have a median income of $32,314 versus $25,605 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,080. 12.4% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line.
