South Tynedale Railway
South Tynedale Ralway
is a
heritage railway
in
Cumbria
and
England
's highest
narrow gauge
railway
. The route runs from
Alston
to
Kirkhaugh
,
Northumberland
, via the
South Tyne
Viaduct, the Gilderdale Viaduct and the Whitley Viaduct. The present line is narrow gauge but is built on the trackbed of a standard gauge line to
Haltwhistle
where it meets the
Newcastle
to
Carlisle
Tyne Valley Line
. The standard gauge closed in 1976 and the trackbed still appears to be mostly intact - presumably the eventual aim is for the Narrow Gauge to reach Haltwhistle too.
