South Secondary SchoolSouth Secondary School is located at 317 Tecumseh Ave W (corner of Tecumseh and Belgrave) in south-central London, Ontario. The school and its football field share the block with an ice arena and an elementary school. The school proper consists of a square redbrick building and several portable classrooms. The main entrance boasts a distinctive atomic symbol artwork. South belongs to the Thames Valley District School Board. Approximately 960 students attend, in grades nine to twelve plus a Co-op program. There is also a gifted student program. The school colours, garnet and gray, lent their name to the Garnet Club, which involves students in community works. South is known for its arts program, which includes drama, visual arts, music and dance. It is one of the few schools in the city to teach Latin. South Collegiate Institute first opened in 1922 on Askin Street, London, with 290 students and 10 teachers. The growing school moved to its current location just six years later, in 1928. School pride was a focus from the early years. According to the school's web site, early students recited a daily pledge: "We're here to win the day for the garnet and gray, and to London South we pledge allegiance now." The school's Latin motto "virtus repulsae nescia sordidae" means "courage will never know ignominous defeat." Alumni Well-known Jungian psychologist Marion Woodman taught English at South in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Her brother Fraser Boa, also a Jungian analyst, was also a teacher. Actress Kate Nelligan (Frankie and Johnny, The Prince of Tides, Million Dollar Babies, A Wrinkle in Time) is also an alumna. References External links
