South Corning, New YorkSouth Corning is a village located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,147. The Village of South Corning is in the Town of Corning. Geography The village is south of the Tioga River and the City of Corning. South Corning is located at 42°7'28" North, 77°2'8" West (42.124442, -77.035463). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,147 people, 492 households, and 319 families residing in the village. The population density is 726.0/km² (1,866.3/mi²). There are 512 housing units at an average density of 324.1/km² (833.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 90.76% White, 7.24% African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 492 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.86. In the village the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males. The median income for a household in the village is $40,455, and the median income for a family is $48,828. Males have a median income of $33,558 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,733. 7.8% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line.
