Somerset is a town located in Bristol County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 18,234.

History

Somerset was first settled in 1677 and was officially incorporated in 1790.

Geography

Somerset is located at 41°44'54" North, 71°9'11" West (41.748502, -71.153188). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 31.0 km² (12.0 mi²). 21.0 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,234 people, 6,987 households, and 5,261 families residing in the town. The population density is 868.1/km² (2,248.6/mi²). There are 7,143 housing units at an average density of 340.1/km² (880.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.22% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,987 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 21.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.98. In the town the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $51,770, and the median income for a family is $60,067. Males have a median income of $42,036 versus $29,851 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,420. 4.0% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
