Social Democratic Party Of Canada

The Social Democratic Party was a social democratic political party founded in 1911 by members of the right wing of the Socialist Party of Canada, who were dissatisfied with what they saw as that party's rigid, doctrinaire approach. The British Columbia-based SDP put forward a more moderate, evolutionary socialist position, and had a more positive view of the trade union movement than its rival. The party elected members to the British Columbia legislature in the early part of the century, and also elected candidates in Manitoba in 1915 and 1920. The SDP joined the Federated Labour Party in 1920, and its successors such as the Independent Labour Party. Many former members of the SDP joined the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation when it was formed in 1932.
