History Soap Lake was officially incorporated on June 9, 1919. In 2002, the town announced preliminary plans to construct the world's largest lava lamp (60 feet in height) as a tourist attraction http://www.giantlavalamp.com/. The actual lake in the town of Soap Lake is a mineral lake that has long been thought to have medicinal value. In fact, it is said that rival Indian Tribes would call a truce when they came to Soap Lake to relax and heal themselves and their animals. This is verifiable in recorded history and by the amount of Indian artifacts found in this area over the years. Current facts to become history: The town is currently trying to revive itself by attempting to erect a giant Lava Lamp as a tourist attraction and by trying to revive the health aspect of the lake to attract the spa crowd. There are several people involved in this attempted revival and they have made "some" progress. Geography Soap Lake is located at 47°23'18" North, 119°29'15" West (47.388341, -119.487611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,733 people, 778 households, and 427 families residing in the city. The population density is 553.0/km² (1,434.0/mi²). There are 996 housing units at an average density of 317.8/km² (824.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.02% White, 0.87% African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.92% from other races, and 3.75% from two or more races. 11.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 778 households out of which 22.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% are non-families. 38.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.91. In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 21.0% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $20,459, and the median income for a family is $25,000. Males have a median income of $27,656 versus $21,771 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,753. 30.6% of the population and 26.3% of families are below the poverty line.
