Snowballing

Snowballing is:
  • a situation in which the exercise of stop orders in a declining market or advancing market or specific share creates further downward or upward pressure, triggering more stop orders, magnifying the decline or advance.
  • in sociological research, a research technique whereby subjects being interviewed indicate potential future subjects to be interviewed. This technique is useful when the researcher does not have established good contacts amongst the target population or when the research subject is such that direct sampling is not appropriate (such as criminal or taboo activities).
  • a sexual practice - see snowballing (sexual practice)
  • the throwing of snowballs - see snow
