Slower BallThe slower ball is a delivery in the sport of cricket which is delivered by fast bowlers. It is generally used to surprise the batsman, who, anticipating a faster delivery, may play it too early and sky a catch to a fielder in the ring or in the deep. The slower ball is essentially a medium-pace delivery (between 97-113 km/h). It is especially vital in limited-overs cricket, as the ball will not carry to the boundary ropes as easily as a normal fast delivery. There are several slower ball variations: - 'Back of the hand', quoted as the most effective variation as it is released more slowly than the other variations, effectively a smaller googly
- 'Split finger', also used in baseball, will appear as a full toss until it suddenly drops mid-pitch
- 'Palm ball', held in the palm to negate extra power and therefore pace
- Off-spinner
- Leg-spinner
- 'Front of the hand', quoted as the hardest slower ball to master, skids insteads of bounces through due to backspin generated by the tips of the fingers releasing the ball
Ajit Agarkar, Chris Cairns, Craig McDermott and also Steve Waugh in his younger days are or were equipped with very-effective slower balls.
